The
Cheshire's History
Established in 1870 in Macclesfield, the Cheshire was one of the first Permanent
Societies which started a revolution in personal finance. Today's Society
is the product of 13 mergers, which began in 1969 when the Cheshire merged
with the Northwich Building Society. This was followed by a series of smaller
mergers through the 1970's and 80's. The branch network now extends throughout
the North West of England and includes 51 building society branches, 13 property
service branches.
The Cheshire now employs over 900 staff and ranks 10th in size out of a total of 65 UK building societies. It is a successful, independent regionally based society with a strong commitment to mutuality, that has achieved profitable growth through the provision of competitive investments, mortgages, and complementary financial services. However, we operate nationally following the successful launch of our eCommerce and Intermediary channels and our 50 seat Customer Contact Centre.
The Cheshire sees world class, quality customer service as the principal cornerstone of its success. By putting customers first, it has endeavoured to continue to provide a standard of service considered outstanding in its sector. The Board and Executive are also firmly committed to maintaining growth, profitability and independence through a firmly held belief that mutuality works for the greater benefit of all its members.
