Newcastle Building Society is the biggest building society based in the North
East of England and currently the 13th largest in the UK with assets under
administration in excess of £2.8 billion. We are a friendly, caring
organisation that takes customer loyalty seriously, gives value for money
along with contributing to the current and future well being of the community.
All aspects of our business are conducted with the needs of three very important groups of people in mind. They rely on and play a vital part in the future of the Newcastle. They are:

We have a strong presence in the North East of England, although our offices stretch from as far as Falkirk in the north to Peterborough in the south and overseas to Gibraltar. Because of the diversity of our distribution outlets, geography is no obstacle to our business. What’s more, Newcastle Building Society customers have access to a growing variety of financial services through the excellent relationships we have built with other organisations.
Investor In People
We presently employ over 770 people on a full or part time basis. The Newcastle
was the first UK building society to be awarded the Investor in People kitemark
in recognition of our commitment to staff development and our ability to provide
a balanced training programme for every member of staff.
The Newcastle’s origins go back to 1861 although our current format is the result of a merger between the Grainger and Newcastle Permanent Building Societies in 1980. Part of our Principal Office in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne is housed in a listed building which was designed by the renowned North East architect John Dobson as a “lyingin” or maternity hospital in 1826.
Firsts
First building society (with the Melton Mowbray) to form
a joint venture company (1997) specifically aimed at providing IT services.
The activities of Newton Facilities Management Limited have helped to spread
the costs of service provision for smaller building societies and other financial
institutions.
First UK building society to provide a full range of investment, housing finance
and insurance services in Gibraltar.
In 1990 we opened a branch in Gibraltar to serve the needs of the local population.
First building society to be awarded the Investor in People accolade for contribution
to staff development.
First building society to offer an interactive mortgage application facility
on digital TV.
