Furness Building Society awarded prestigious CommunityMark for outstanding
contribution to local community.
Furness
Building Society has become the first building society in the Country to be
awarded the highly prestigious CommunityMark which demonstrates the important
commitment that the Furness has to the local communities in which it operates.
the CommunityMark model has been developed by Business in
the Community and is based on the excellence model of the British Quality
Foundation. It assesses an organisation's approach to community activity and
is divided into two sections, business excellence and community excellence,
with the Furness scoring highly in both sections. the Society is very much
aware that being part of the community is good for business as its outstanding
results for 2003 demonstrate.
Rob Cairns,
Chief Executive of Furness Building Society, said 'We are extremely delighted
to receive this award. It is due recognition of the amount of work we undertake
with our local communities. As we want the se communities to use our services,
we think it only right that we should also be contributing to the m. We do
this not only through donations and sponsorships but by our staff, giving
the ir time and expertise, to serve on a variety of local committees, acting
as school governors, undertaking sponsored activities, etc. I certainly believe
that community activity is an integral part of our business, being a mutual
building society. Mutual building societies are owned by the ir members rathe r
than external shareholders. the y had the ir roots in local communities and
the Furness is proud to continue that heritage in the North West of England.'
