Mortgage Providers
The Coventry Permanent Economic Building Society was founded in 1884 by a
small group of citizens, one of whom was Thomas Mason Daffern, who became
the Society’s first secretary.
By the beginning of the first world war, the "Economic" as it was
known, had become the largest building society in the area in terms of assets.
Subsequent mergers in the 1970’s and 1980’s greatly enhanced the assets of
the Society and in 1983, following a merger with the “Coventry Provident”
, the building society became known as "Coventry Building Society."
Coventry Building Society has continued to protect the financial interests
of its members and this parallels the courage of Lady Godiva who rode naked
through Coventry when her husband, Earl Leofric agreed to waive taxes to citizens.
It is in recognition of this, that in the early 1970’s, the Society adopted
its famous "Lady Godiva" logo.
For well over a century we have been helping people achieve their dreams of
becoming home owners. The many social and economic changes which have taken
place during that period have resulted in building societies taking on a significantly
different role from that of the early friendly societies.
This is the Coventry Building Society you see today not only looking after
your interests now, but also helping you make sure you have a secure future.
As a building society we are responsible to our members and work solely in
their interests, returning the benefits of our building society status. Unlike
banks and converted building societies (PLCs) we have no outside shareholders,
and therefore no shareholders’ dividends to pay. Instead, more of the Coventry’s
profits are invested in better interest rates for our savers and borrowers.
Branches have always been a key part of our service and at a time when many
banks in the UK are reducing their presence on the high street, we have maintained
our investment in our branch network, predominantly based in the Midlands.
As new forms of distribution develop it is essential that we offer our members
a wider choice of convenient access to our services. We have invested significantly
in two internet sites www.coventrybuildingsociety.co.uk and a specialist
website dedicated to helping customers remortgage www.remortgages.co.uk.
In addition, customers can view their personal Coventry accounts, check balances
and transact on some accounts, within Online Services.
We have also continued to build on our highly successful telephone operation.
The Customer Service Centre, supported by the latest technology, handles nearly
one million calls each year.
We have over 1,000 employees and have invested a great deal of time in training
and developing our staff to deliver excellent service to our customers. In
recognition of this, we have held Investors in People Accreditation for over
five years and in 2002 gained a prestigious National Training Award for the
training and development of its staff. In 2003, a West Midlands Training Award
for its Advisor Accreditation Programme was gained. In 2004, the Society was
selected as one of the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to work for.
We reward our long standing customers of five years or more offering the
Privilege Rate mortgage for borrowers and the Privilege ISA for savers.
Coventry Building Society's 'TLC in the Community Programme' has a commitment
to support communities primarily based or active in the Midlands region, the
area covered by the Coventry Building society branch network.
Awards in 2003 include 'Best Capped Rate Lender' from Mortgage Talk, 'Best
Capped Rate Lender' at the Moneywise Awards, 'Highly Commended Internet Mortgage
Provider' at the Your Money Direct Awards, 'Highly Commended Online Mortgage
Provider' at the Your Mortgage Awards and a 'Four Star Mortgage Lenders and
Packagers' Award at the Financial Adviser LIA Service Awards.
